The water in a bong filters ash and resin, which directly affects both the flavor and the cleanliness of each hit. Letting it sit too long introduces health risks that are easy to avoid with a basic routine.
How often to change it
Daily users: Change the water every session, or at least every day. Fresh water gives cleaner hits and lets you actually taste the strain. Running boiling water through the piece removes residual ash and pathogens.
Less frequent users: A post-session rinse with boiled water eliminates residues and preps the bong for storage. Dry the piece thoroughly before putting it away.
General rule: Regardless of how often you use, swap the water every 2 to 3 days at minimum. Going a full week carries health risks, even in dry climates.
Deep clean: Every couple of weeks, do a full clean with isopropyl alcohol and salt. This removes the stubborn resin buildup that hot water alone can't touch.
Signs it's time to change the water
The smell
If the bong smells stale or musty, it's overdue. Bong water traps contaminants over time and the odor is the first warning sign.
Water color
Fresh bong water is clear. A slight tint after a session is normal. Dark, murky water with visible particles means contaminants are building up and you're inhaling them.
Resin buildup
Resin accumulates on the walls as a natural byproduct of smoking. While some people try to scrape and reuse it, the charred residue harbors mold and mildew that thrive in wet environments.
Mold and mildew
Watch for these warning signs:
- Pink discoloration (bacterial growth)
- White or gray fuzzy spots (mold)
- White speckled powder (early-stage mold)
- Black specks (black mold, particularly harmful)
Smoking from a piece with any of these introduces harmful pathogens directly to your lungs.
Keeping it clean
Dry the bong thoroughly after cleaning. Don't leave stagnant water sitting for extended periods. Store it in a dry, clean location. Using fresh water consistently and doing a periodic alcohol-and-salt cleaning keeps things in good shape.
Your bong is an investment in the experience. A clean piece means smoother, more flavorful sessions and none of the health risks that come with neglect.
